Get your lawn ready for autumn.
When it gets cooler outside, it is a good time to prepare your lawn for autumn. All to make it as healthy during winter and less work for you in spring.
Fertilise.
- If it is dry or compact aerate it with a garden fork first.
- We recommend Lawn Solutions Premium lawn fertiliser.
- If you use our Special Rocket top dressing, which contains nitrogen fertilisers, you don't need to add any extra fertilising. 10 mm thick cover would be enough.
- Water in straight away.
Prevent pests in your lawn.
- Autumn is also a good time to prevent any pests in your lawn before they even think about coming. Usually in April, we get lawn grubs, crickets, web worms, moths that lays eggs.
- Apply Acelepryn, which is a preventive insecticide that controls pests for up to 6 months. It only works BEFORE the actual pest is in your lawn. If you already have pest in your lawn you need to kill them first and then apply Acelepryn. We recommend Searles Dead Grubs.
- Acelepryn is available in 4 kg / 10 kg bags. You only need 750 gr for 100m2.
Prevent weeds in your lawn.
- When the grass goes into a more dormant stage it is easier for weeds to move in. Stop them before they start to grow. Oxafert treat weeds like Winter grass, Crowsfoot, Creeping oxalis and Crabbgrass.
- Apply Oxafert which is a pre-emergent herbicide. It will prevent weed seedlings before they grow. Lasts in your lawn for up to 3 months.
- Oxafert only works BEFORE the weeds starts to grow. If you already have weed in your lawn you need a herbicide to kill them first.
Mow higher.
- You want to get as high leaves as possible to collect sunlight and nutrients before winter. From really low in beginning of autumn to really high in winter. Raise incrementally during autumn.
Other tips for weeds and pests.
- If you are unsure if you have pest already. Grab a tub of soapy water and pour it on a part of your grass in dusk. Within 10 seconds you will have grubs coming to the surface, if you have any. It is like shampoo in your eyes for them!
- Hot boiling water can also work as a very environmental friendly herbicide. Pour it on weeds between pavers or small areas. Be careful though so you don't kill more than weeds.
- Wandering weeds, you need a herbicide that contains Glyphosate (glycine), it will not only kill the leaves above ground, it will also kill the parts under ground.
