Getting your garden ready for holidays.

Getting your garden ready for summer.

The holidays are around the corner. Prepare now to have everything ready for when you are going away or just to make sure you don't have to work too much in the garden during the heat. Here are some tips.

Feed.

Considering the wet spring we had this year, many plants have not gotten enough nutrients. The rain has washed it all away. If your plants looks a bit yellow this could be a sign of not enough nutrients.

Pellet fertiliser.

Easy to just sprinkle on the soil or in pots. Dry fertiliser pellets, or granular fertilisers are slow-releasing and absorbed by the plant over time. We recommend Organic Booster or Searles 5 in 1 organic fertiliser (also available in liquid form).

If you have pets or don't want the smell we recommend Garden Gold which comes in a shaker with smaller granules. Also contains wetting agents.

Liquid fertiliser.

Dilute with water and apply by watering can or hose-on spray bottle. Goes to work immediately.  We recommend Powerfeed by Seasol.

Water.

During the warm hot summer months, soak twice a week. Preferably not between 10am to 4pm, then it just evaporates. However do not wait until it gets too dark then it will be staying wet all night which creates mould and fungus.

Water or wetting agents.

You can also add water crystals in the soil or buy already made. We recommend Penetraide re-wetting granules which assists the water to penetrate and spread through dry soil or potting mix.

For your lawn we recommend LSA Lawn Soaker, specifically developed for use on lawns. 2 litre pack will treat 150 square metres.

Mulch.

Get a good depth of mulch in your garden and it will keep the moisture in the garden for longer. We have several different ones to choose from. We recommend a cover of 75mm to protect from weed and keep the soil moist.

Add some colour.

We have plenty of, as we call it, potted colours, this time of the year. Easy annuals perfect to brighten up your garden, patio or balcony for the festive season.
