Turf
Choosing the right lawn is a very important decision given all houses are different & all people are different, so what suits your neighbour may not suit you. Whilst trying to give you the best tips on making your selection, we always recommend a visit to one of the 3 stores to look, feel & walk on the displays. The staff are happy to pass on their experiences and expertise. If it is 1sq mt or a 1000sq mt Lee Rowan's Gardenworld are happy to supply.
For small quantities we have a handy pick up service available from all 3 stores each Friday afternoon. Our turf ordering system is to order & pay for your grass before Thursday Midday & the grass will be delivered to the store for your collection by Friday Midday.
For quantities over 20sq mt we can arrange a prompt delivery service. Our advice is to allow at least 2 dry fine days before delivery when placing your order.
Sir Walter Buffalo
There are many cultivars of Buffalo grass. The main soft leaf cultivar we supply is known as ‘Sir Walter’ (Winter Active, Low Thatch, Environmentally Friendly) Buffalo. It has superior colour retention and fungus resistance compared with other varieties. Before laying you should ensure that your soil base is approximately 1in.(2.5cm.) below surrounding mowing strips and drive-ways. You should fertilise your base then start laying with one strip of turf being placed around the perimeter, then proceeding along the longest edge, across the slope in a brick work fashion, filling in any gaps around the edges.
After laying your new lawn, it can be top dressed (especially in the hotter months) or at least rolled on the joints between each strip of turf. This helps to maintain the moisture around the newly laid turf. As Buffalo is slow growing after being transplanted it requires extra care (especially water) for the first few weeks. Buffalo should be kept moist, so depending on the weather, up to 10hrs. watering per day may be required if hot and dry. If humid, only water before lunch . A soaker hose is the preferred method of watering as they keep the turf moist with the minimum amount of water and hence, the least amount of flooding in the sub-soil area.
Sir Walter is less invasive into gardens than Kikuyu and Couch and less mowing than Kikuyu (approx 50% in summer).
Sir Walter Buffalo will stay green in winter in most areas provided it is fertilised well in autumn and not mown too low prior to winter.
Where Sir Walter Buffalo is in a shady position it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sun light and watered less frequently.
Shade Master Buffalo
This variety of Soft Leaf Buffalo has a broad and long coarse leaf. It is good in high traffic as it is a very fast grower, however Shade Master Buffalo will loose its colour and turn purple in winter. Before laying your lawn you should ensure that your soil base is approximately 1in.(2.5cm.) below surrounding mowing strips and drive-ways. Laying should start with one strip of turf being placed around the perimeter, then proceeding along the longest edge, across the slope in a brick work fashion, filling in any irregular gaps around the edges at the end.

Shademaster Buffalo tends to get a purple colouring in the leaf tip during the cold months if kept short and not fertilised. If this is ascetically a problem, it can be cured by increasing the mowing height before winter and fertilising, thus allowing enough length in your lawn to mow off the purple tips during winter.
Where Shademaster Buffalo is in a very shady position it should be kept longer (50mm) at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sunlight.
Kikuyu
The Kikuyu variety of lawn has a vigorous growth. Its complexion is made up of a broad coarse leaf and is of a broad runner style. Kikuyu will not tolerate shade or excessive dampness. It withholds colour well in most conditions and is non allergenic. Kikuyu requires high maintenance during the summer months and needs to be mowed every 5-7 days in summer. Fertilise and water regularly.
Common Couch
Common Couch is a dark and very dense lawn that has a small leaf with very few seedheads. It will discolour if the temperature drops below 3 degrees Celsius. It has a good tolerance to wear and tear and needs a minimum of 4 - 5 hours of sunlight per day.Common Couch only needs to be fertilised half as much as other couches and has less lawn clippings. It needs to be mowed between 7 - 14 days and will tolerate low mowing and most sprays.
Plateau Couch
Plateau Couch is a deep, rich green grass. The colour is retained into the cooler times of the year up to frost conditions. The low growth habit of Plateau avoids much of this problem, therefore retaining colour and vigour where others do not. Growth energy in Plateau Couch is directed laterally. This provides for a rapid spread of the grass at establishment and when recovering from damage. The lack of upright growth significantly reduces the mowing frequency of Plateau without compromising the turf quality or recovery from damage. Scalping is for the most part eliminated, particularly in peak growth periods. Plateau has the best shade tolerance in the couch varieties. It only needs to be fertilised half as much as other couches and has less lawn clippings. It will tolerate low mowing and most sprays.
