Tropical fruit.

Grow your own fruit salad. November is a great time to start, lots of sun and plenty of moisture in the ground. Here are some examples of tropical fruit that works in our area.

Passionfruit.


An attractive climber with beautiful flowers in summer, which becomes fruit later. Fruit within 12 months from planting, in season.


HEIGHT: Climbing plant.


IDEAL POSITION: Full sun against a fence or wall.

Lime.


Small, evergreen tree with white blossoms in spring / summer, followed by round green fruit in autumn/winter. Fruit within 12-18 months from planting, in season.


HEIGHT: 2 m+


IDEAL POSITION: Full sun.

Feijoa.


Evergreen with egg-shaped fruit, tasting sweet pineapple/strawberry. Like a fruit salad in itself. Fruit within 12 months from planting, in season.


HEIGHT: 5m+


IDEAL POSITION: Full sun.

Mango.


Evergreen tree dense spreading canopy. White flowers which becomes orange/yellow fruit in Summer. Fruit within 5-6 years from planting.


HEIGHT: 5-8m


IDEAL POSITION: Open sunny position.

Avocado.


Evergreen tree that produces smooth skinned pear-shaped fruit. Fruit within 5-7 years from planting, in season.


HEIGHT: Up to 4 m


IDEAL POSITION: Sheltered in full sun.

Blueberries.


Shrub which produces berries during summer. Next fruiting season.


HEIGHT: 1m+


IDEAL POSITION: Shade and sun.

Kiwifruit.


Kiwifruit bear fruit on the female vine and require a male plant for cross pollination. One male is suitable for 8 females. Fruit within 2 years of planting, in season.


HEIGHT: climbing plant 4-5 m


IDEAL POSITION: Sunny spot and close to a fence or trellis.
