Grow your own veggies.
For us living in the Newcastle area, we can grow veggies almost all year around. Here are some of our favorites, available when in season.
Zucchini.
Long cylindrical shaped fruits with think skin and firm flesh. Protect from strong wind.
SEASON: spring - summer.
Pumpkin.
Pumpkins can be stored for months after harvest. They need plenty of space to grow though.
SEASON: spring to early summer.
Capsicum.
Capsicum also known as sweet peppers are warm season plants. Available in a variety of colours and shapes.

Tomatoes.
Tomatoes are loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants. Tomatoes are warm weather plants which need plenty of sun to thrive.

Artichoke.
Also called globe artichoke. Large thistle like plant with very attractive edible bulb. Very hardy perennial plant.
SEASON: late winter, early spring.
Broccoli Purpelicious.
This is a purple tender stem type and continuous harvest because of its sprouting nature. This variety maintain its purple colour after cooking.

Broccoli.
Widely known as "superfood" as it is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, K and iron. Available in large heads, and smaller varieties like broccolini.

Kale.
Widely known as "superfood" as it is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants.

Broccoli Purple.
Widely known as "superfood" as it is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, K and iron. This variety is purple in colour, changes to a vibrant green when cooked.

Kale Candy Crush.
Still "superfood" as normal kale, but in fluorescent pink and sweeter in flavor.

Cauliflower.
Easy to grow and has a fairly nutty almost sweet flavour.

Snow Pea.
Sweet, flat, crispy, edible pod. Pick before full maturity for best flavour.
SEASON: spring - winter
Carrots.
Root vegetable, mostly orange but also purple, yellow. Carrots are a fair source of B vitamins.

Broad Beans.
Fresh broad beans has a mild, creamy and nutty taste. Best eaten when young and tender.

Onions.
Onions are edible bulbs which comes in a variety of colours and tastes.

Spinach.
Leafy and nutritious vegetable, rich in vitamins and iron. Grows very quickly.
SEASON: all year around.
Brussel sprouts.
Sun-loving vegetables that develop masses of delicious, edible sprouts. Eat them raw or grilled or rosted.
SEASON: autumn - winter
Beetroot.
Deep purple, nutritious and tasty root vegetable that can be roasted, steamed or pickled. The edible leaves are just as good for you and great in salads.
