Why and when to use MULCH

Why and when to use MULCH.

When is it a good time to mulch? Why should you mulch? Or which mulch to use? Here are some tips.

When to use mulch?

  • Weed suppression. Cover the soil with a 75 mm thick layer of mulch to form a weed barrier.

  • Water conservation. A layer of mulch keeps the moisture in the soil longer. Specially in the heat of summer.

  • Aesthetics - to pretty an area up. Different mulches, different colours, with different plants, can make a big difference.

What is the best mulch?

It all depends on the situation and which plants. We recommend a 75 mm thick layer of mulch is the best and then depending on situation which mulch to use.

Woodchip & Eucalyptus mulch. Will not hold as much moisture as other mulches. Great for natives and streetscape gardens.

Pinebark fine or coarse. Very good at keeping moisture close to the surface. Bark chips swell by holding moisture and keeps the soil cool underneath. Great for tropical and exotic plants.

Rich Mulch. Our own mix, an organic blend that will both mulch and feed your soil at the same time.

Sugar Cane mulch. This one breaks down over time. It is great for produce gardens, seedlings for example and your next veggie patch. To refresh, just fork it into the soil and you have enriched the soil at the same time.

How much MULCH do you need?

We recommend a 75 mm thick layer of mulch. You buy mulch by the cubic metre (m3). Calculate your m2 x depth = m3
