Checklist for autumn in the garden

Checklist for autumn in the garden.

Autumn, when it gets cooler, is time to start planting again. It's warm enough to allow the plants to get established and strong before winter sets in. Here are some tips for autumn in the garden.

CLEAN.

  • Pull out any leftover veggies, weeds or old plants that you don't want to keep.

IMPROVE THE SOIL.

To improve the soil, there are plenty of soil conditioners to choose from, depending on how much improvement your soil needs.

We recommend cow manure, apply a 50x100 mm layer, then turn it in to your top soil (fork it in). Other options include:

  • Planting compost (available in bags)
  • 5 in 1 organic fertiliser (available in bags or liquid)
  • Blood & bone (available in bags)
  • Cow manure (available in smaller bag, Big Green Bag or bulk)

PRUNE & SHAPE

  • Rejuvenate and shape shrubs, hedges and plants.
  • Pruning in autumn stresses the plant less than in the heat of summer, and the plants are less susceptible to harm from the cold in winter.
  • Don't remove new buds that flower in autumn or winter eg. Camellia.

RENOVATE YOUR GARDEN

If you're considering renovating your garden, autumn is the perfect time to do so. This season allows for structural changes such as moving or digging new flower beds, planting hedges or screens, installing a vegetable garden, or laying a new lawn. The weather is not too hot, providing an ideal environment for establishment before winter sets in.

PLANTING.

Autumn is the time to establish new plants. In autumn the plants can focus on establish roots since the weather is cooler and the sun is less intense. In spring they will be ready to flourish! The nursery is still full of plants to choose from.
