Growing your own veggies is an easy way to get fresh produce as well as saving money on grocery shopping. Growing your own is easy.

 Create a new veggie patch.

  • Find a spot in full sun and out of the wind (it will burn the plants in the heat of summer).
  • Clean out the area you want to use as a veggie patch. Prepare with a 30 cm layer of Rich Organic Garden Soil.
  • You want it built up so there are room for a lot of organic matter.

Prepare an existing veggie patch.

Rejuvenate and improve the soil with organic matter and leave it for about 2 weeks.

  • Cow manure or compost = Put on a 50×100 mm thick layer. Turn it in your top soil (fork it in). We source a “feed lot” grain fed, beef cattle manure, to ensure no weeds ends up in your garden beds.
  • Searles 5 IN 1 Organic fertiliser = Mix one part to three parts existing soil.

Plant your veggies.

Time to plant the veggies you want to grow. There are plenty of veggies to choose from however, check what works best for each season.

Plant in a grid or block form rather than single lines, it aids pollination.

  • Plant in winter:
  • All year: lettuce, spinach, herbs
  • Plant in spring & summer: tomato, pumpkin, zucchini, eggplant, cucumber, capsicum
  • Plant in autumn & winter: broccoli, beans, cabbage, carrots, onions, peas, spinach, kale, broad beans, artichoke, beetroot.

Water & Feed regularly.

  • Water regularly, veggies want routines. For example try to water every other or third day, at the same time each time. Like having a set time for dinner each night.
  • Prevent transplantation chock. When planting from a punnet the plant goes into shock. To prevent or aid, water with Seasol once a week the first weeks. Seasol is not a fertiliser, it is a tonic to improve the soil to support the plants. Does not feed as a fertiliser.
  • Fertilise with Powerfeed every other week to promote growth.

Mulch.

Cover the soil with mulch to protect from weeds and keep moist in. Put on at least 75 mm to stop any weeds. Our own mix, Rich Mulch, is designed to protect and feed your garden. It contains Fine Pinebark, Eucalyptus Mulch, Composted sawdust, mushroom compost and cow manure.
