Here are some crucial tips to get the best results for your potted plants.
Choose the right potting mix.
You should not use the same soil that you use in your garden for your pots. Garden mix does not provide the extra nutrients your plants will need when living in pots. Potting mixes provide your plants with extra nutrients, better drainage and depending on your choice, wetting agents.
- Platinum Potting mix: contains extra fertilisers, nutrients, re-wetting granules and water crystals. Trace elements and other essential components to stimulate growth. Better water holding capacity and drainage properties. Feeds plants for 12 month or more.
- Premium Potting mix: contains fertilisers, water crystals. Trace elements and other essential components to stimulate growth. Water holding capacity and drainage properties. Feeds plants for up to 9 months.
- General Potting mix: very basic and usually no additives, hence contains less nutrients and fertilisers. Can include some soil wetter to assist in water penetration. Contains sufficient nutrients for up to one month. You should add a controlled release fertiliser at the time of potting for best result.

When to water?
Plants in pots needs to be watered more frequent than plants in the ground.
How often you need to water will depend on the potting mix you are using. Usually, the lesser quality potting mix, the quicker it will dry out.
How often to fertilise?
Fertilising depends on the plant and which potting mix you used when potting your plant. However, here are some standards:
- Liquid fertiliser: Once a week. We recommend: PowerFeed, Nitrasol to feed, Seasol as a tonic.
- Granules/ pellets: Every 3 months. We recommend: Scott’s Osmocote Controlled Release Fertilisers for pots and planters.
How often to repot?
Repot every 3 or so years.
It does not necessarily have to be into a bigger pot. Only to change the potting mix. Your potted plant has only what is in its pot to keep it alive. Good potting mix lasts longer, however nothing lasts forever.
